The Long-Awaited Post on Mixing...

...is on its way. But before I write about my own favorite cereal mixes, and the insane level of cereal artistry that informs each, I'd like to ask you, my myriad readers, to let me know some of your favorite combos. Apple Jacks and Cocoa Crispies? Crispix and Cheerios? Grape Nuts and Lucky Charms? I won't judge. We won't judge. I just want to be educated. I'll even try a few of them out for consideration in my article on the wide world of mixing. So please, if you will ... lay it on me. [That is, lay it on the comments section.]

  1. I'm pretty plain-Jane when it comes to cereal. My favorite mix is Cheerios with Corn Flakes or Total. If I'm feeling like taking a walk on the wild side, Cheerios and Raisin Bran it is!

  2. It's gotta be Special K and Rice Krispies, or Life and Rice Krispies. Gotta love the Snap Crackle and Pop!

  3. i like that, louie... Rice Krispies is an underrated and overlooked cereal whenever it's not immediately followed by the word "Treats." highly mixable, as well. I just may have to try Life and Rice Krispies!

  4. Isn't Special K basically a Rice Krispie in flake form?

  5. louie, you've been challenged! (i wouldn't know; i've never had special k)

  6. Look, I'm a patient man. Okay, I'm really not that patient. But I am forgetful. And that's something. But at some point even a patient (and/or forgetful) man has to take a stand. If I were an optimistic man I'd tell you the good news is that your "mixing post" can now be accurately described as "long-awaited". Sadly, I am becoming a skeptical man. I am starting to doubt that this post will ever exist. And I think we all can agree that such a turn of events would be a tragedy.

I'm going to skip right past how completely freaking weird it is that I have read this blog in the first place (let alone have decided to post a comment on one of its articles). Mostly because I'm not really sure how it ended up in my google reader, filed appropriately under "random" (though I'm guessing Facebook is somehow to blame). I'm sure stranger things have happened. Besides, if you stop to consider that I am currently living in a country where the vast majority of cereals discussed herein are not available for sale, combined with the fact that I haven't had an actual conversation with the author since high school journalism class, the whole thing begins to sound a bit too much like Jeff Goldblum attempting to describe Chaos Theory in a helicopter flying over Jurassic Park.

Anyway, I was sitting at work attempting to amuse myself (no one seems to be at the office between Christmas and New Years except me), and after catching up on all that The Cereal Hour had to offer I couldn't help but bring this to your attention. And by "this" I mean the lack of a mixing post in the two and a half months since the above teaser was created.

I'm going to be honest. This particular hypothetical post was of great interest to me. Why? Because I am an anti-mixite. I guess I'm just something of a purist. I think baseball is better without the designated hitter. I enjoy vanilla milkshakes. And when I eat my cereal, I eat it just as the good General Mills and Lt. Col. Kelloggs intended: one flavor at a time. I have never had a positive experience combining two cereals together. I invariably end up wishing that I had simply stayed the course and had two smaller bowls in their true form. I realize that this may sound crazy to you (probably only marginally more crazy than writing a 600-word reply to a random blog post that didn't ever exist, but crazy nonetheless). I was hoping your mixing article might tell me what I've been missing, or even offer some advice for us mixing luddites out there.

It's not that I don't enjoy being reminded about moderately underrated tunes with overly long titles that were popular in 1996. And yes, its fun to hate The Vines (even if the 90% of their catalog is far less annoying than either of the Ace of Base songs you mentioned). But that isn't what The Cereal Hour is supposed to be about, is it? Okay, maybe a little. But shouldn't also be about "the issues"? You know: mixing, milk ratio, bowl size & specialization, etc.

So just do everyone a big favor and deliver us your long-awaited mixing post. We're counting on you. Or at least the very least we're bored… or becoming impatient… or growing skeptical. Ah well, it's hard to keep track.

p.s. It's okay to admit it: This is clearly the best piece of writing advice you've gotten since I sagely counseled you to describe the recording style of Everclear's Sparkle and Fade "as if you could actually hear the garage in the background" during your seminal review of So Much for the Afterglow.
